# AEO vs GEO: What's the Difference and Which Should You Focus On?

AEO (answer engine optimization) and GEO (generative engine optimization) describe almost the same work: making your brand the source AI tools use, and ideally name, when they answer a question. The difference is emphasis. AEO grew out of optimizing for direct answers, such as featured snippets and voice assistants, and now covers any answer engine. GEO focuses specifically on generative AI search, such as ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Google AI Mode. In practice, teams run one program for both.

If you only remember one thing: do not split your budget or your team between "AEO" and "GEO". Choose the buyer questions that matter, then improve the content, technical access and third-party evidence that AI answers rely on.

## AEO vs GEO at a glance

| | AEO (answer engine optimization) | GEO (generative engine optimization) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Origin | Featured snippets, voice assistants and direct answers | Academic and industry work on generative search engines |
| Focus | Any system that answers a question directly | AI systems that generate an answer from retrieved sources |
| Typical surfaces | Google AI Overviews, featured snippets, voice assistants, ChatGPT, Perplexity | ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews |
| Success looks like | Your content is the answer, or is cited as its source | Your brand is cited or recommended in the generated response |
| Core work | Clear answers, structured content, authority, technical access | The same, plus attention to how generative systems retrieve and combine sources |
| Measurement | Answer and snippet presence, citations, mentions | Citations, mentions, share of voice across AI engines |

## What is AEO?

Answer engine optimization is the practice of improving how answer engines understand, cite and recommend your brand. The term predates today's AI assistants: it was used for winning featured snippets and voice answers, where a single source supplied the answer. As AI assistants became the main answer engines, AEO expanded to cover them. Read our full guide to [what AEO is](/answer-engine-optimization/).

## What is GEO?

Generative engine optimization is the practice of making your content easier for generative AI systems to retrieve, trust and use when they write an answer. The term became popular after research on optimizing content for generative search engines, and it is sometimes called generative search optimization or generative SEO. Read our full guide to [what GEO is](/what-is-generative-engine-optimization-geo/).

## Where AEO and GEO overlap

Almost everywhere that matters:

- **Both start with buyer questions.** The unit of work is the question a buyer asks, not a single keyword.
- **Both depend on SEO fundamentals.** Google says pages need to be indexed and eligible for a snippet to appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode, with no special requirements beyond that. Other engines also rely on crawlable, readable pages.
- **Both reward clear, specific, verifiable answers.** Direct answers near the top of the page, original data and attributed claims make content easier to quote.
- **Both need third-party evidence.** Reviews, comparisons, publications and communities shape what AI answers say about you.
- **Both are measured by presence in answers**, not by a position on a results page.

## Where they differ in practice

The differences are small but worth knowing when you read vendor pitches or job descriptions:

- **Scope.** AEO can include non-AI answer formats such as featured snippets and voice. GEO is specifically about generative AI answers.
- **Retrieval behavior.** GEO work pays more attention to how generative systems fan out a question into related searches and combine several sources, which favors pages that cover a question and its follow-up subtopics.
- **Vocabulary.** Agencies and tools often pick one label for positioning. A "GEO tool" and an "AEO tool" usually track the same things. Our comparison of the [best AEO and GEO tools](/answer-engine-optimization-tools/) treats them as one category.

## AEO vs GEO vs SEO

SEO is the foundation for both. It earns rankings and clicks on traditional results pages, and the same crawlability, content quality and authority make your pages eligible to be used in AI answers. AEO and GEO add a different goal (being the answer or the cited source) and a different measurement (presence in AI answers across repeated runs). Most teams should treat AEO and GEO as an extension of SEO rather than a replacement for it.

## Which should you focus on?

Neither, as a separate label. Focus on the outcome both terms describe:

1. **Pick 20 to 40 buyer questions** across category, comparison, alternative and problem queries.
2. **Measure where you appear today** in the AI engines your buyers use, and which sources those answers cite.
3. **Fix the gap you find**: clearer answers on your own pages, technical access issues, or missing third-party coverage.
4. **Recheck the same questions** over the following weeks and connect visibility to AI referral visits and pipeline.

If you work with an agency or buy software, judge it on that workflow, not on whether it calls itself AEO or GEO.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Is AEO the same as GEO?

They overlap so heavily that most teams treat them as the same practice. AEO covers answer engines broadly, including featured snippets and voice; GEO focuses on generative AI search. The work and measurement are largely the same.

### What is the difference between AEO and SEO?

SEO aims for rankings and clicks on search results pages. AEO aims for your content to be the answer, or a cited source, inside AI-generated and direct answers. AEO builds on SEO foundations rather than replacing them.

### Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. Generative AI search still relies on crawlable, indexable, high-quality pages, so SEO remains the foundation. GEO adds the goal of being cited inside generated answers.

### Do I need separate AEO and GEO tools?

No. AEO and GEO tools track the same things: prompts, mentions, citations, competitors and sources across AI engines. Choose a tool by engine coverage, prompt volume and whether it helps you act on the data.

### Which term should I use?

Use whichever your audience uses. In US search data, "AEO" and "what is AEO" are searched far more often than "generative engine optimization", but buyers searching either term want the same outcome.
