# Can Claude Access the Internet? How Claude Web Search Works

Yes. Claude can access the internet through its web search feature, which lets it search the live web, read pages and answer with citations to its sources. Claude can also fetch a specific web page when you give it a link. Without web search, Claude answers from its training data, which has a cutoff date and does not include recent events.

This guide explains how Claude's web access works for users, how to turn it on or off, and what it means for website owners who want their content to be found and cited by Claude.

## How Claude web search works

According to [Anthropic's help center](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/10684626-enabling-and-using-web-search), when you ask about something that benefits from current information, Claude invokes a search tool to ground its response in content from the live web. When it searches:

1. You see an indicator that Claude is searching.
2. Claude reviews multiple sources to find relevant content.
3. The answer includes direct citations, links to the sources and relevant quotes where appropriate.

Every web-search answer includes citations, so you can check the original source.

**Web fetch** is the related capability for links. When web search is on and you paste a URL, Claude can retrieve the full content of that page to summarize or analyze it.

## How to turn web search on or off

- **In the newer Claude experience**, there is no toggle: Claude searches the web when it helps answer your question.
- **Where the toggle exists**, click the "+" button in the lower-left corner of the chat, then select "Web search" to turn it on or off.
- **On Team and Enterprise plans**, an Owner or Primary Owner must first enable web search for the workspace in Organization settings, under Capabilities. Members can then switch it on in their chats.

Free accounts can use web search, but searches and fetched pages count toward usage limits that reset every five hours. Turning web search off for conversations that don't need current information conserves capacity, and asking for key points rather than a full analysis of a long article uses less of it.

## What Claude knows without web search

Without web search, Claude relies on what it learned during training. That knowledge has a cutoff date, so Claude may not know about recent news, product releases, price changes or events after that point, and it cannot see a specific web page unless you paste its contents or use web fetch. For anything time-sensitive, turn on web search or provide the source yourself.

## What Claude web search means for website owners

If you want Claude to find and cite your content, it needs to be able to reach it. [Anthropic's crawler documentation](https://privacy.claude.com/en/articles/8896518-does-anthropic-crawl-data-from-the-web-and-how-can-site-owners-block-the-crawler) describes three separate bots:

| Bot | What it does | If you block it |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Claude-SearchBot** | Crawls the web to improve the relevance and accuracy of search results for users | Your content may be less likely to appear in Claude's search answers |
| **Claude-User** | Fetches pages when a user asks Claude a question that needs them | Claude cannot retrieve your pages in response to user requests, which may reduce your visibility in user-directed search |
| **ClaudeBot** | Collects public web content that may be used for model training | Signals that your future content should be excluded from training datasets |

Because these are separate, you can allow search and user retrieval while opting out of training. For example:

```text
User-agent: Claude-SearchBot
Allow: /
User-agent: Claude-User
Allow: /
User-agent: ClaudeBot
Disallow: /
```

A few practical points from Anthropic's documentation:

- **Use robots.txt, not IP blocking.** Anthropic says blocking its IP addresses may not work reliably, because it prevents the bots from reading your robots.txt. It publishes the IP ranges its crawlers use so you can verify genuine requests.
- **Set rules per subdomain.** Each subdomain needs its own robots.txt.
- **Crawl-delay is supported** if you need to slow crawling.
- **Check your CDN and firewall**, which can block AI crawlers even when robots.txt allows them.

Content also needs to be readable in the HTML a crawler receives. Our guide to [why AI crawlers miss content](/blog/why-ai-crawlers-miss-content-google-sees/) covers JavaScript rendering and other common blockers, and our [OpenAI crawler guide](/blog/oai-searchbot-vs-gptbot-vs-chatgpt-user/) explains the equivalent controls for ChatGPT.

## How to get cited by Claude

Being reachable is the first step. Claude, like other AI assistants, tends to cite pages that answer the question directly, include specific and verifiable information, and are corroborated by other credible sources. Track a set of buyer questions in Claude alongside ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI features to see where you appear and which sources win instead. Our guide to [building AI citations](/blog/building-ai-citations-guide-to-influencing-llm-sources/) walks through the process.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Can Claude access the internet?

Yes. Claude can search the web and read web pages through its web search and web fetch features, and its answers include citations to the sources it used. Without web search, it answers from training data.

### Is Claude web search free?

Web search is available on free accounts, but searches and fetched pages count toward the free plan's usage limits, which reset every five hours.

### Can Claude read a link I send it?

Yes, when web search is enabled. Claude can fetch the full content of a page from a URL you provide and summarize or analyze it.

### Does Claude cite its sources?

Yes. Answers that use web search include direct citations and links to the sources, so you can verify them.

### How do I stop Claude from using my website?

Use robots.txt. Disallow ClaudeBot to opt out of training, and Claude-SearchBot or Claude-User to limit search indexing and user-requested retrieval. Blocking the search and user bots may reduce your visibility in Claude's answers.

### Does Claude know about recent events?

Only with web search. Claude's built-in knowledge has a training cutoff, so turn on web search or share a source for anything recent.
