# Reddit's ChatGPT Citation Collapse: What Our Data Across Two B2B Brands Shows

Reddit's share of ChatGPT citations collapsed in August 2026. Our own citation tracking says the collapse was real and confined to one engine: across two independent B2B brands, Reddit still accounts for roughly 4.4% of Google AI Mode citations, and zero citations in ChatGPT and Perplexity. The useful conclusion is not that Reddit stopped working, but that it became a single-engine surface.

## What actually happened in August 2026

Between mid-July and mid-August, Reddit's share of ChatGPT Search citations fell from an average of 3.83% to 0.52%, an [86% relative drop measured by Promptwatch](https://promptwatch.com/blog/chatgpt-stop-citing-reddit). Other trackers put the fall higher still. The proximate cause was a change in how ChatGPT builds its query fan-out around August 8, moving toward direct `site:` interrogation of specific domains rather than broad open-web search. That redistributed citations away from discussion platforms and toward official sources and documentation.

A second factor followed. Reddit closed its doors at the robots level. As of this writing, [Reddit's robots.txt](https://www.reddit.com/robots.txt) is about as restrictive as a robots file gets:

```
User-agent: *
Disallow: /
```

A blanket disallow against every crawler, on a domain that had been one of the most-cited sources in AI answers. Reddit's public content policy now routes access through licensing rather than open crawling.

So the headline is accurate. What the headline misses is which engine it applies to.

## The per-engine split, from our own tracking

We track citations per engine rather than as one blended score, which means we can separate what moved from what did not. The figures below come from two independent B2B brands we monitor, across roughly 6,000 citation-domain records. The two operate in different technical categories and share no audience.

| Domain       | Google AI Mode (Brand A) | Google AI Mode (Brand B) | ChatGPT | Perplexity |
| ------------ | ------------------------ | ------------------------ | ------- | ---------- |
| youtube.com  | 2,978 (9.5%)             | 948 (17.2%)              | 0       | 0          |
| reddit.com   | 1,382 (4.4%)             | 245 (4.5%)               | 0       | 0          |
| linkedin.com | 788 (2.5%)               | 113 (2.1%)               | 0       | 0          |

Two observations are worth more than the rest.

First, the two brands agree almost exactly on Reddit. 4.4% and 4.5% of AI Mode citations, in unrelated categories. That consistency suggests we are looking at a property of the engine rather than a quirk of one brand's content or audience.

Second, user-generated content does not appear in our ChatGPT or Perplexity citation sets at all. Not a reduced share. Zero rows, for Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn alike, across both brands.

### Reconciling this with a blended number

We have previously published a blended citation mix across the brands we track: YouTube 18%, Reddit 9%, LinkedIn 5%, user-generated platforms combined 36%, from 14,355 citations logged between April and August 2026.

Both figures are correct, and the relationship between them is the actual lesson. The blended number is dominated by Google AI Mode, because AI Mode produces far more citations than the other engines in most of the sets we track. Blending therefore reports a healthy Reddit share for a channel that, in two of three major engines, contributes nothing.

That is what a blended AI visibility score does. It averages across systems that work nothing alike, and produces a number that moves for reasons you cannot act on. You cannot un-blend an average after the fact, which is the argument for storing one row per citation with the engine as a first-class column and aggregating at read time.

## What ChatGPT cites instead

If UGC lost share, something absorbed it. In our category the top ChatGPT-cited domains are vendor pages, editorial and documentation:

| Domain                | Citations | Type          |
| --------------------- | --------- | ------------- |
| techradar.com         | 251       | Editorial     |
| developers.google.com | 135       | Documentation |
| arxiv.org             | 128       | Research      |

Alongside those sit a cluster of category vendor sites. The pattern is consistent with the fan-out change: when a model interrogates specific domains rather than searching the open web, it reaches for sources it can treat as authoritative on a named topic. Official documentation, established publications and vendor pages fit that shape. Forum threads do not.

This is worth sitting with if you sell into a category where your competitors publish well. The pages being cited in ChatGPT for your category questions may be your rivals' documentation, and no amount of community activity will displace them.

## What this changes, and what it does not

The instinct after a headline like August's is to cut the channel. That is the wrong move for most brands, and the right question is narrower: which engine do your buyers actually use?

**If your citations concentrate in Google AI Mode**, nothing about your Reddit or YouTube work should change. AI Mode did not follow ChatGPT's fan-out change. YouTube in particular remains the largest non-owned domain in both of our sets, at 9.5% and 17.2%, which is a stronger argument for video than most brands are currently acting on.

**If your buyers are in ChatGPT**, Reddit was never the lever you thought it was, and the work that pays is different in kind: documentation a model can quote, self-contained claims, clear authorship, and presence on the editorial and review surfaces the engine now favours. Our earlier guide on [how Reddit mentions shape AI citations](/blog/how-reddit-mentions-shape-ai-citations/) describes the mechanism that applied before this change; the engine-specific caveat above now applies to it.

**If you do not know which describes you**, that is the finding, and it is the one worth fixing first. A single blended visibility percentage cannot answer it. [How to measure share of voice and track competitor mentions in AI search](/blog/how-to-measure-share-of-voice-and-track-competitor-mentions-in-ai-search/) sets out how to establish the per-engine baseline, and [AI brand monitoring across ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity](/blog/ai-brand-monitoring-how-to-track-your-brand-across-chatgpt-gemini-and-perplexity/) covers the tracking side.

## Caveats on our own numbers

Two limits are worth stating plainly.

These are two brands, not a market. They are both technical B2B, both tracked with prompt sets built around their own buyers, and neither is a consumer brand. A retail or health category could look different, and we would expect the absolute shares to differ even where the direction holds.

Zero citations in a tracked set means zero in the prompts we run, not a guarantee that ChatGPT never cites Reddit for anything. Our prompt sets are built around commercial buyer questions. A model answering a question about a personal experience may well behave differently, and that is exactly the kind of query where forum content remains genuinely the best source.

What we are confident about is the shape: the August collapse was engine-specific, Google AI Mode did not follow, and any brand reading a single blended number through this period saw a modest decline where the underlying reality was one channel going to zero on two engines while holding steady on a third.

## The takeaway

Reddit did not stop working. It stopped working in ChatGPT and Perplexity, while holding a stable mid-single-digit share of Google AI Mode citations across two unrelated B2B brands.

Before you cut a channel on the strength of an industry headline, check which engine the headline applies to and which engine your buyers use. Those are frequently not the same, and a blended visibility number is designed in a way that hides the difference.
