### Citation Readiness Report

ⓘ

This reads the HTML your server returns, which is the version an engine can rely on. It cannot see content added after hydration, and passing every check does not guarantee a citation: authority still decides whether you are chosen among the pages that qualify. To find out whether engines already cite your brand, run the [AI visibility audit](/ai-audit/).

## What the citation readiness checker tests

Answer engines do not read your page, they extract from it. That difference decides whether ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Mode can quote you as a source. This free checker reads the HTML your server returns, along with your robots.txt and llms.txt, and grades the four things that determine whether a claim can be lifted off the page and attributed to you.

### Extraction

Whether the substance is in the server response at all, whether an answer sits near the top, and whether sections are self-contained enough to quote without the surrounding page.

### Evidence and authorship

Named author as a real entity, sameAs links that resolve, publish and modified dates, outbound citations, and specific verifiable numbers rather than unsupported claims.

### Structured data

JSON-LD presence, a page type an engine understands, a publisher or Organization node, and FAQ markup where the page answers discrete questions.

### Machine access

Snippet directives that quietly block quoting, canonical and indexability, llms.txt, and whether OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended are actually allowed in.

## Ranking and citation are different problems

A page can rank on page one of Google and never appear in an AI answer. Google can rank a document on links and query relevance; an answer engine has to find a specific passage it can attribute to you. That is why sites with strong traditional SEO sometimes see almost no AI citations, and it is also the good news: extraction problems are cheap and fast to fix, because the crawler is coming back anyway. Authority is the slow part. For the mechanics of the citation layer, read [how to optimize your website to be cited by AI answer engines](/blog/how-to-optimize-your-website-to-be-cited-by-ai-answer-engines/) and [how to improve E-E-A-T to get cited in AI search](/blog/how-to-improve-e-e-a-t-to-get-cited-in-ai-search/).

## The self-block nobody checks

The most common finding on this checker is not missing schema. It is a page that is indexable, well written, and carrying a `nosnippet` or `max-snippet:0` directive inherited from a template, which tells engines they may not quote it. The second most common is a robots.txt that blocks one AI user agent while the team believes it blocks another. Those are separate crawlers doing separate jobs: OAI-SearchBot serves ChatGPT search, GPTBot collects training data, and Google-Extended governs Gemini and AI Overviews grounding. Blocking one is not blocking the others. Our [robots.txt tester](/tools/robots-txt-tester/) covers that surface in more depth.

## After the page is ready

Fixing extraction makes your page eligible to be cited. It does not tell you whether engines actually cite you today, which questions they cite you for, or which engine matters most for your buyers. That is a brand-level measurement rather than a page-level one, and the split between engines is usually more uneven than teams expect. Run the [AI visibility audit](/ai-audit/) to see where you stand across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode, and read [how to measure share of voice in AI search](/blog/how-to-measure-share-of-voice-and-track-competitor-mentions-in-ai-search/) for the method behind it.

Tool questions

## Citation Readiness Checker FAQ

How the utility works, what its result means and where its limits are.

What is citation readiness?

Citation readiness is whether an AI answer engine can lift a specific, attributable claim off your page and point at you as the source. It is different from ranking. A page can rank well in Google and still be uncitable, usually because the useful content is assembled by the browser after load, because claims are spread across paragraphs instead of stated in one place, or because a snippet directive tells engines not to quote it.

How is this different from an AI visibility audit?

This checker looks at one page and tells you whether it is structured to be quoted. An AI visibility audit looks at your brand and tells you whether engines already cite you across a set of buyer questions. Fix the page here, then run the AI visibility audit to see whether citations follow. They answer different questions and you generally want both.

Why does client-side rendered content hurt citations?

Some crawlers execute JavaScript, some do not, and the systems assembling AI answers make their own decisions about how much of a page to render. If your reviews, prices, or main body text only exist after hydration, you are betting your strongest signal on the generous end of that range. Fetch your own page with JavaScript disabled: what remains is closer to what an engine reliably sees.

What does nosnippet do to AI citations?

A nosnippet or max-snippet:0 directive tells search engines they may not show a text snippet from your page. In practice that also suppresses the excerpt an AI answer would quote, so the page can be indexed and still be effectively unquotable. It is one of the most common accidental self-blocks we see, usually inherited from a template or a plugin default.

Which AI crawlers does this check?

The checker fetches your robots.txt and reports whether it allows OAI-SearchBot (ChatGPT search), GPTBot (OpenAI training), PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended (Gemini and AI Overviews grounding), and Bingbot. These are separate user agents doing different jobs, so blocking one is not blocking the others, and blocking the wrong one can remove you from an answer surface you wanted to be in.

Does schema markup help get cited by AI?

Structured data alone does not buy a citation, but it resolves ambiguity about what your page is and who wrote it. The checks that matter most are an author as a real Person node with sameAs links to profiles that exist, an Organization node your pages consistently reference, and a stated publish or modified date. Valid markup that describes nobody in particular is common and does very little.

What is a self-contained claim?

A self-contained claim is a sentence that survives being lifted out of your page on its own. 'Extraction fixes typically land within four weeks' works quoted. 'This usually happens faster than the second phase described above' does not, because it needs the surrounding page to mean anything. Answer engines quote fragments, so writing claims that stand alone is most of the work.

Is the citation readiness checker free?

Yes. Enter a URL, then unlock the full report with your name and work email. There is no payment or subscription required.

Why did my page score badly when it ranks well in Google?

Ranking and citation are different problems. Google can rank a page on links and query relevance even when the page itself is hard to quote. An answer engine has to find a specific passage it can attribute. That is why sites with strong traditional SEO sometimes get almost no AI citations, and why fixing extraction usually moves faster than fixing authority.

How often should I re-run this?

Re-run after any template, theme, or plugin change, because snippet directives, schema, and server rendering are the things that silently regress during a redesign. Otherwise, check your highest-intent pages once a quarter.
