Example

`utm_source`

Where did the click come from?

newsletter, linkedin

`utm_medium`

What type of channel?

email, cpc, social

`utm_campaign`

Which campaign?

spring-launch

`utm_term`

Which paid keyword?

ai-seo-agency

`utm_content`

Which link or variant?

hero-cta

Only `utm_source`, `utm_medium`, and `utm_campaign` are required for Google Analytics to record a campaign. The term and content tags are optional and most useful for paid search and for A/B testing two links inside the same campaign. Keep every value lowercase and use hyphens instead of spaces so your reports stay tidy.

## UTM Builder FAQ

Common questions about this tool

A UTM parameter is a small tag added to the end of a URL that tells your analytics where a visitor came from. The five standard tags are utm\_source (where the traffic originates, like newsletter or linkedin), utm\_medium (the channel type, like email or cpc), utm\_campaign (the specific campaign), utm\_term (a paid keyword), and utm\_content (a way to tell two links in the same campaign apart). When someone clicks a tagged link, Google Analytics reads these tags and groups the visit correctly.

Google Analytics 4 reads the same five UTM parameters as older versions, so a link built here works in GA4 with no changes. Add your source, medium, and campaign, then copy the URL and use it in your email, ad, or social post. In GA4 the traffic shows up under Reports, then Acquisition, where session source, medium, and campaign map directly to your utm\_source, utm\_medium, and utm\_campaign values.

Analytics treats Email and email as two different sources, so inconsistent casing and spelling scatter one campaign across many rows in your reports. Pick a convention, usually all lowercase with hyphens or underscores instead of spaces, and stick to it. This builder lets you save presets so your team reuses the same source and medium values every time, which keeps your reporting clean and your attribution trustworthy.

Tagged URLs are for measuring your own marketing links, not for pages you want Google to index. Because UTM tags create URL variations of the same page, you should only add them to links in emails, ads, and social posts, never to internal links or canonical URLs on your site. Your canonical tag should always point to the clean, untagged version of the page.

Everything runs in your browser. The URLs you build and the presets you save stay on your device in local storage and are never sent anywhere. Exporting your list as a CSV is the only action that asks for an email, and that simply unlocks the download.

UTMs tell you which channel a click came from, but on their own they stop at the visit. To tie a tagged click to an actual lead or sale you need to carry that campaign data through your forms and into your CRM. That end-to-end attribution, from AI and search visibility all the way to pipeline, is what Snezzi is built to do.
