Search engines also need to be able to find it and trust it. Follow these four steps to go from a raw URL list to a sitemap Google actively crawls. 1. **Generate the file.** Paste every important, canonical, indexable URL into the generator above and produce a valid sitemap.xml. Include only pages you want indexed: skip thank-you pages, staging URLs, parameter duplicates, and anything blocked by robots.txt or a noindex tag. 2. **Place it at your root.** Upload the file so it is reachable at https://yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml. The sitemap must live on the same domain as the URLs it lists, and each URL should return a 200 status and match your preferred protocol (https) and hostname (www or non-www). 3. **Reference it in robots.txt.** Add a line reading `Sitemap: https://yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml` to your robots.txt file. This lets any crawler discover the sitemap automatically, even before you submit it anywhere. 4. **Submit it in Google Search Console.** Open the Sitemaps report, enter the sitemap path, and click Submit. Then monitor the report for the discovered URL count and any parsing errors. Repeat the submission in Bing Webmaster Tools to cover Bing and Copilot. If your site has more than 50,000 URLs or the file exceeds 50MB uncompressed, split it into multiple sitemaps and list them in a sitemap index file, then submit the index instead of each individual sitemap.
